New Activist Bursary Callout

TO:

All CEIU BC/YT Members in Good Standing

FROM:

Vanessa Miller, NVP BC/YT

DATE:

November 1, 2018

SUBJECT:

CEIU BC/YT $3000.00 New Activist Bursary

New Activist is defined as follows:

  1. A member in good standing of BC/YT
  2. Does/has not actively participated in Union meetings, conferences, committees, and events.
  3. May have had some training
  4. May hold an elected position on a local executive
  5. May hold an elected position on the Regional Executive Council (not more than one term)

At the 2017 Presidents Conference a resolution was approved for a new activist bursary. The bursary is awarded in the fall of the prior year for use in the following fiscal year.

A new activist is not necessarily a young worker, it could be any activist that is newly engaged or re-engaged in the union. Generally, they do not sit on many committees or councils and may not be able to secure funding to attend events.

The money provided by the bursary can be used for any convention, conference or training and will be paid out after the event(s) unless an advance is requested.

Applications are due by November 15, 2018. Applications will be reviewed, and the successful applicant will be notified by the end of the November.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at millerv@ceiu-seic.ca if you need more information.

NVP BC/YT Spring Report

NVP BC/YT Spring Report to 2018 BC/YT Presidents Conference in Vancouver, BC, April 14-15, 2018

And away we go..

United we move forward

I'd like to think that I hit the ground running. When our plane landed in Vancouver on the way home from Convention, my phone started vibrating. Some of you must have cheerfully felt that the plane ride had given me enough time to adjust to becoming NVP and composed emails to me while in the air. :-) I took your lead and the phone calls began that night.

I spent two days working out of our RUO office on West Pender. Meeting with our staff to talk about the President's Conference and Convention, settling into the NVP office, and consulting about some common goals as we move forward. More emails and phone calls came in. And then the Director's started writing.

Management meetings are starting soon. In the meantime I'm organizing site visits in Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo. I also had an opportunity to organize a rally for the PSAC a few days after returning - just a gentle reminder to the employer that our members will not be rolling over on sick leave.
